Japanese non-governmental activities for UNESCO has a long history.

Date: Fri, 5 Feb 2016 06:27:28 +0900

I would like to inform about "National Federation of UNESCO Associations in Japan (NFUAJ)", which is an NGO(!) and established in 1947 BEFORE Japan admitted to UNESCO (1951) and UN (1956).
http://www.unesco.or.jp/en/ (this domain is made by NGO)
https://www.unesco.or.jp/en/history.html

According to http://www.mext.go.jp/unesco/007/001.htm (in Japanese), NJUAJ helped to establish AFUCA (Asia-Pacific Federation of UNESCO Clubs, Centers and Associations) in 1974. WFUCA (World Federation of UNESCO Clubs, Centers and Associations) was established in 1981.

  • Mr. Andrew Bell (UNESCO UK) Experience of interactions between designations from the UK
  • Mr. Shinsuke Nakamura (Mt. Hakusan BR, Japan) Synergy between Geoparks and BR through Hakusan as a focal point
  • Mr. Yoshihiko Iida (UNU-IAS) Possibility of synergy between GIAHS and BR for generating biocultural diversity
  • Mr. William Dunbar (UNU-IAS) Building synergy between UNESCO MAB and the Satoyama Initiative
  • Mr. Natarajan Ishwaran (HIST) Labels and Performances: the case of UNESCO sites
There are not a few Biosphere Reserves that are multiply designated with other internationally designated areas: World Heritage Sites, Ramsar Sites, UNESCO Global Geoparks, and Global Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS). All the programmes/conventions have similar goals related to conservation and sustainable development, however, these frameworks sometimes compete with each other for funding, authority, and human resources because of the lack of communication and coordination among them. Having in mind that IUCN is preparing a guidance publication called "Multiple Internationally Designated Areas - Guidance for harmonizing the integrated management of overlapping Ramsar Sites, World Heritage Sites, Biosphere Reserves and Global Geoparks" at IUCN World Conservation Congress in 2016, this session will discuss the possible solution for the synergy of these international frameworks from BR perspective.
In the session, it is planned to have eight speakers from each international, national and site level.
