Prisoner's dilemma tournament

Date: Fri, 11 Jan 2008 08:30:43 +0900I introduce the following message.i would like to make you aware of a computer tournament, similar inspirit to axelrod's prisoner's dilemma tournament but targeted at exploring strategies for social learning. in addition to immortalglory, a 10000 euro prize will be awarded to the winning strategy.rather than playing the PD against each other, strategies will live ina virtual environment, where they can learn profitable acts by eitherexperimentation or imitation. the goal is, of course, to find out themost profitable acts, balancing time for experimentation, imitation, and exploitation of known acts.i am sure some of you will take up the chanllenge!you are welcome to spread the word about the tournament to anyone whomight be interested!full details are on our project site at:http://www.intercult.su.se/cultaptation/tournament.phpthanks for reading, and good luck with everything!stefano http://www.intercult.su.se/~stefano

A Happy New Year 2008

Last year I became the first Japanese Pew Marine Conservation Fellowship.I visited San Jose for annual meetings of Society for Mathematical Biologyand Ecological Society of America. I also visited Altamont Wind Power EnergyFarm, Taiwan twice for Marine affairs meeting and national park meeting, and Bangkok for ASEAN marine pollution meeting.. I got a JSPS Grant of Global COE Program "Global Eco-Risk Management from Asian Viewpoints", which is only one COE in the ecology. I contributed deer and marine managementprogram for Shiretoko World Heritage. I study and promote adaptive riskmanagement for avian collisions of wind farms. I appeared in the TV program "Close-up Gendai", wrote opinion in Asahi Shimbun and HeraldTribune on "Environment-friendly fisheries".
I will publish a textbook "Ecological Risk Science: An Introduction" this March.
I hope you have a happy new year and healthy life with your family.
Yours,
Hiroyuki Matsuda

Taiwan Coasts Conservation

Date: Fri, 21 Dec 2007 08:59:59 +0900
Thank you very much again for invitation. I learned the status of Taiwan coastal ecosystem and feel difference between the east coast and west coast. The east coast of Taiwan Island is well secure. Taiwanesse can conserve the east coast, and they may have some restoration projects and conserve some hot spot in the east coast. This contrast between east and west coasts is definitely better than Japan.

Pew Fellowship Annual Meeting

Date: Mon, 3 Dec 2007 14:10:19 +0900
Thank you for quick and kind replies.
Now I am joining the Pew Marine Conservation Annual Meeting as the first Japanese Pew Marine Conservation Fellow. I enjoy this meeting. Many people cerebrate me as a Pew Fellow and say interested in my talk. My proposal to Pew Fellowship is http://risk.kan.ynu.ac.jp/matsuda/2007/PewFellowship07.html
I have a little bit minded a more criticism because my project plan in Shiretoko World Heritage allows limited catch of sea lions, lack of by-catch report, and I support managed whaling. However, every Pew community people agreed to the importance of sustainable fisheries and traditional knowledge. They say interest in Japan-Russia World Peace Park idea in my proposal, and some of them are interested in the 5th World Fisheries Congress.
Adaptive management procedure (this is not frequently discussed here)
Co-management (the concept of stakeholder involvement is popular in this meeting).
Sincerely yours,

Kristen
It is a very sad news. I met her in Kyoto NaGISA/F-MAP Meeting in 2004. She was really one of the most friendly and kindly connected people in CoML and me.
Very sincerely,
Hiroyuki Matsuda

Some of you may have learned this sad news by now. The Secretariat hasbeen informed that Robin Rigby, NaGISA's project manager and outreachliaison, was killed on Sunday in a traffic accident in Kushimoto, Japan. This comes as a shock and is a tremendous loss for NaGISA, for theCensus and for many of us, personally, who over the years became goodfriends with Robin. She was only 30 years old and was one of the mostenergetic, friendly and well connected people in the Census.

Robin Rigby's funeral will take place on December 15th at 1 pm (local time in Japan, +9:00 to GST).
It will be held at "Miyabi" (one of the private ceremonial halls in theShirahama area).Address: 1371 Shinjo Cho, Tanabe City, Wakayama 646-0011 JapanTEL: +81-739-25-4194http://www.t-miyabi.com/info/info.html Chief mourner: Kohta ASAMIDORI (Robin's husband)
